Sometimes, even the most avid runners need a little motivation to get out and run. This is especially true for new runners, as it is not part of there daily routine, and when they think of running they think of hard work. I would certainly like to that to change (for myself too!), so I’m going to put together an ultimate “article”, that if you read, you should be on your way to success in getting on those running shoes on a regular basis.

Mental/Psychological Benefits

Lots of times when people think of running, they only think of physical benefits (health and fitness). But the truth is, running has many mental benefits as well.

  1. Running gives a feeling of freedom and empowerment knowing that your legs are strong and capable.
  2. Is used to treat depression and addictions, helping users feel less fatigued, confused, and tense through the release of beta-endorphin hormones. These hormones give a sense of euphoria, contentment and happiness.
  3. Other similiar endorphins are released that bring many benefits. In fact, they can completely change your mood. For example, many say that work and life seem much less problematic once they finish a run.
  4. The mind starts working fast when enganged in running.
  5. Stimulates growth hormones that make you feel younger.
  6. Releases pent-up anger andĀ aggression.
  7. Gives a sense of accomplishment.
  8. Builds confidence.
  9. Betters self-image.

Physical Benefits

  1. Slows the aging process by reducing bone and face muscle loss.
  2. Increases bone density, reducing the chance of osteoporosis.
  3. Enhances the glow of the face.
  4. StrengthensĀ the heart.
  5. Uses the other half of the lungs not used during normal breathing (how to breathe properly). In fact, many smokers have regained full lung capacity after 6 months of running, and it also reduces asthma.
  6. Lowers blood pressure, lowers bad cholesterol, and reduces the risk of blood cot.
  7. Helps maintain elasticity of arteries.
  8. Increases concentration of lymphocytes and white blood coruscles to improve the immune system.
  9. Relieves stress
  10. Burns roughly 100 calories per mile (which is around 500-700 calories an hour), more than any other cardiovascular sport besides cross country skiing.
  11. Improves coordination (loose footing, rocks, roots, curbs).
  12. Rejuvinating (fresh air circulating through lungs).

Other Benefits

  1. Helps build communities through running groups and healthy competition
  2. Collects charity through “fun runs” type of events.
  3. Can be done just about anywhere, with little time, and by yourself or with a group.
  4. Very low costs to participate.

Quotes

One of the greatest ways to inspire yourself is too read a good quote. Quotes can help you realize truths in very few words and a certainly different approach. These are some of the quotes that you would likely see in a college or high school locker room. I would give you my insight on each, but I feel that quotes work best when interpreted by the reader.

“The reason that most fail instead of succeed is that they trade what they want most for what they want at the moment.” – Unkown

I especially like the next one. It is completely true;.

“The idle man does not know what it is to enjoy rest.” – Albert Einstein

“Time is a created thing. To say ‘I don’t have time’ is to say ‘I don’t want to.’”– Lao Tzu

Well, that is it. Now what do you say we go for a run?

I almost forgot, how can you go for a run without some tunes to help you keep your pace? Try these songs.
