Have you come up with your New Year’s Resolution yet? It’s coming up soon, so if you haven’t I’ll give you a little help. These are the most common New Year’s Resolutions and some tips on how to keep them.

Eat Healthy

  • Find an “organic food only” store to start shopping at. Since only organic/healthy food is sold there, you won’t be tempted by unhealthy foods. Another great option is to shop at local farmer’s markets, which promote your local economy.
  • Research. How can you know if you are eating healthy if you don’t know what eating healthy means in the first place? Research to find out what foods are healthy and why.
  • Check out some of my favorite articles: 10 worst and best foods, top 5 super foods. and 100 quick and easy health foods.

Exercise more often/Get in shape

  • Find someone with the same resolution. Having someone alongside makes exercise more fun, and gives you someone to talk to. It also gives you a reason to work out: your friends are depending on you.
  • Set yourself up for success. Buy some nice running shoes, get a membership to a nice gym, etc. It’s all just more motivation.
  • Know all the benefits of being in shape. I wrote an article not too long ago named Need motivation to run? Here it is, that goes over the many mental, psychological, physical, and social benefits to running and a few more tidbits to (hopefully) motivate you to run. Of course, running isn’t the only thing you can do. I’d suggest trying something that appeals to you the most.

Lose Weight

  • First off, know  that just by having the first 2 resolutions on this list, this one will come along without any extra work, because eating healthy. Neato.
  • Visit this page. It will go through the psychological ways.
  • Do NOT go for the commercial “lose weight fast” schemes. There is only one effective way to lose weight, and that is through consistent, balanced and healthy habits. The reason that commercial products do not work is that they do not address the core to the problem, they only “patch” it.

Save money/Get out of Debt

  • Do the math:Instead of spending 100 dollars now on some headphones, you could instead save and invest to obtain 300 dollars in a few years for a top of the line iPod.
  • Find small and big ways to save money online.

Spend more Time with Family

  • If the reason you don’t spend time with family is that you get bored, try meeting at a bowling alley or other recreational area so you have something to do. Plus, this will hopefully create stories to talk about at another time.
  • You say you’re too busy? Invite them to lunch or for a morning coffee. I’m sure you can think of something.
  • If all this seems doubtful because you live too far away, writing letters, emailing or calling will make up for the time you can’t spend together.

Be more Organized

  • First and foremost, get rid of all the junk you don’t need. Go through drawers and cabinets and ask yourself if you’ve used this in the past 6 months. If you haven’t, donate it to goodwill, throw it out, have a garage sale, whatever works.
  • When you’re done using something the common thing to do is to set it down on a table or where you happen to be sitting. This is one of the worst habits out there when it comes to being organized. Always put something back where it belongs when you are done with it.
  • If you are speaking in terms of organizing your day, create a to-do list every night for the next day. I find that before you go to bed is the best time, but that’s not necessarily true for everyone. You could also do this for the next week, month, year, etc.
  • Making a to-do list is only useful if you carry through with it… so make sure you get in that habit right from the start.
  • Keep a calendar and planner.

Learn something new

  • Whatever you’re trying to learn, there is going to be at least something on the internet to help you. Visit youtube and search “how to <something>”. If there is nothing on youtube, take a step back and do a google search. If you can’t find anything comment and I will find it for you.
  • See if any of your friends would like to take up this new experience as well. You can help each other. Where one person is weak, the other may be strong.
  • See if there are any community clubs about the subject.
  • Where form or technique is involved, such as golf, it is very important to get professional help from the start. You wouldn’t want to form bad habits, because it would take more than a professional to get rid of them.

Have less stress

  • Run! Running releases endorphins that bring many benefits such as releasing pent-up anger, stress, and aggression. It also helps build confidence and rejuvinate the body and lungs. These are just a few, here is a full list.
  • One of the greatest causes of stress is being unprepared for something. Being more organized (see above) will help you be more prepared.
  • Get more sleep at night. Life is getting busier and busier, yet we are getting less and less sleep while we should be getting more. With less sleep, we perform poorly and therefore do things that cause stress.

Conclusion

Hopefully the year of 2010 is a good one, and you are able to keep your New Year’s resolutions. Please stop by and leave a comment later on and tell me how you are doing.
